415 - A LARGE SHADED ENAMEL SILVER KOVSH by Feodor Ruckert, Moscow, 1899-1908, retailed by Faberge, with scratched inventory no 20811
The prow and ornate handle formed as a stylised bird, the body profusely enamelled with large stylised peonies and scrolls punctuated by coloured cabochon stones at intervals against ivory and cinnabar grounds and further enriced with raised twisted ropework rim and geometric designs, length 24cm.
PROVENACE:
The kovsh was presented to Mr. William Grant McKenzie, a New Zealander, who by family tradition was a harbour official in Nagasaki at the time of the Russo-Japanese war. He apparently assisted the Imperial Fleet in their time of need and was thanked by the gift of this kovsh.
