A Faberge Box by Fedor Ruckert
Описание на Русском
Entered locally, this Faberge enamel box was made by Faberge's principal workmaster in enamel, Fedor Ruckert. It shows the excellence of his craftsmanship that typifies Faberge's work, it has the import hallmark for 1911 and draws heavily on old Russia and Russian folk lore. The en plein enamel picture is after Victor Vasnetsov's 'The Knight at the Crossroads'. The original now hangs in the State Museum in St. Petersburg and his work influenced the development of modernism and symbolism in Russian painting and poetry. The rock in front of the Knight has three choices: 'If you go to the right - you'll loose your horse; If you go to the left - you'll loose your life; If you go forwards - you'll loose both….slightly prophetic being a few years before the Russian Revolution. The vendor's Russian grandfather lived in St Petersburg and had to leave Russia in 1919.
