With the workmaster's mark of Feodor Rückert, Moscow, 1908-1917, scratched inventory number 22250
Of typical form, the rounded body with a pierced upright handle and pointed prow, on a circular foot, enameled throughout with varicolored stylized flowers and vegetal forms on pale and royal blue grounds, the front centering a shaped reserve painted en plein with a detail of The Boyar after Konstantin Makovsky.
Height 7 inches (17.8 cm), length 6 1/4 inches (15.9 cm).
The works of the eminent Russian painter, Konstantin Makovsky (1839-1915), were a source for decoration by the most important craftsman producing enamel in Russia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Makovsky was a master of history painting whose works evoked the romance of a lost age which appealed to Russian sensibilities of the time. Capitalizing on the popularity of the artist, Fabergé, Ovchinnikov, and others reproduced the artist's works on a range of objects, from kovshi to caskets. Feodor Rückert, arguably the most talented of all craftsmen producing enamel, whose objects were retailed by Fabergé and other prominent firms, also drew inspiration from Makovsky's paintings. A Boyar Wedding Feast is perhaps the most widely reproduced of Makovsky's works on objects from Rückert's workshop. Less common is the subject reproduced on the present kovsh, The Boyar, which is executed to the highest technical standard and which serves as an example of Rückert's production at its finest. Another example of a work by Fabergé in cloisonné and en plein enamel with a detail of The Boyar is a box in the collection of the Hillwood Museum in Washington, DC (catalog number 15.209).
