An important California private collection; John Atzbach Antiques, Bellevue, Washington, acquired from the above, Acquired from the above by the present owner. Russian folklore is rich with images of young noblewomen gazing into mirrors. The "Tale of the Dead Tsarevna" (Skazka o myortvoy tsarevne i o semi bogatyryakh) is one such a popular tale from Russian folklore, the most notable iteration of which is in the 1833 poem of the same name by the poet Aleksandr Pushkin, and which was illustrated by Nesterov in 1889. Lermontov's poem "Song of the Merchant Kalashnikov" (Pesn' pro kuptsa Klashnikova) illustrated by Solomko contains a similar scene.
