Fine Russian gilded silver and shaded cloisonne enamel box. Decorated with an amazing miniature courtyard scene within a field of multi-colored geometric designs on the lid. Similar intricate enamel decoration completely covers the front, back and sides as well. The maker, Feodor Ivanovich Ruckert was a famous Russian enameller and is also considered the master of miniature paintings on enamel. By utilizing highlights in the cloisonne enamel work to complement color tones in the painting, he created an elaborate frame for this miniature. Ruckert worked independently, as well as on contract as a supplier of this type of work for Faberge' and other important Russian firms. His association with Faberge' is well documented beginning in 1887 when Faberge' opened his Moscow workshops and continued on into the 20th century. In 1912 Ruckert produced a cup depicting Faberge's House in St. Petersburg to celebrate his twenty-five years with Faberge'. Numerous items from this wonderful era of Russian craftsmanship have the Faberge' mark with Imperial warrant, overstriking the mark of Feodor Ruckert. The marks (see photos) on the bottom of the box are Ruckerts initials (in Cyrillic), the town mark (Moscow) and the standard 88 (.916 silver) with the assayers initials. After further research we believe the miniature is depicting the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy. This massive structure and imposing tower was built circa 1298.
